The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) Recap & Ending Explained: Why Luigi’s Rescue Makes Mario a Hero

10 min read · Estimated reading time— views

Mario can survive a training course, a furious gorilla and a road suspended above the clouds. What he cannot do alone is finish the fight that finally brings him home. The climax of The Super Mario Bros. Movie gives the brothers a familiar magical advantage, but the decisive act happens before they touch it: Luigi steps into danger to protect Mario.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the 2023 animated feature introduces its heroes as Brooklyn plumbers whose business is struggling. A mysterious pipe separates them into two very different worlds. Mario finds allies in Princess Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong; Luigi lands in the territory of Bowser, a conqueror whose romantic ambitions are as dangerous as his army.

RecapRush Viewpoint: The film works best as a story about persistence becoming cooperation. Mario’s willingness to keep trying matters, but his brother’s loyalty gives that determination its purpose. The final victory belongs to two people who refuse to leave one another behind.

Full spoilers ahead: This guide covers the complete 2023 film, the Brooklyn battle, Bowser’s defeat and both credits sequences. It does not recap the later sequel.

Full Spoiler Recap

1. Two plumbers want a chance

Mario and Luigi have left their old employer to start a plumbing business together in Brooklyn. Their advertisement is ambitious, but their first job goes badly, and their family doubts the decision. Mario takes the criticism hard. Luigi is more anxious about the dangers of their work, yet he remains firmly beside his brother.

When a major water-main problem threatens the neighborhood, Mario sees an opportunity to prove that their business can help. The brothers go underground to investigate. A mysterious green pipe pulls them into a passage between worlds, where they lose their grip on each other and are separated.

2. Mario and Luigi land on opposite sides of the danger

Mario emerges in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad, who takes him to Princess Peach. Luigi arrives in the Dark Lands and is captured by Bowser’s forces. Bowser has already stolen a Super Star from the Snow Kingdom, giving his campaign a frightening advantage. He intends to marry Peach and threatens destruction if she refuses.

Mario learns that reaching Luigi means confronting Bowser. Peach agrees to help, but she also has a kingdom to defend. She tests Mario on a demanding obstacle course. He fails repeatedly, learning how the power-ups work and how quickly one mistake can erase an advantage. His persistence earns her respect even before he masters the course.

3. Peach seeks an army

Peach, Mario and Toad travel to the Jungle Kingdom to ask Cranky Kong for military help. Cranky agrees only if Mario can defeat Donkey Kong in an arena. The fight initially looks hopeless: Donkey Kong is stronger and enjoys the crowd’s attention, while Mario keeps getting knocked down.

Mario uses a Cat Suit power-up to turn the match around. Winning secures the Kong army’s support, but it does not immediately make the two fighters friends. Their rivalry continues even as they join the same mission. Both want to prove themselves, and neither likes admitting how much he needs the other.

4. Rainbow Road becomes an ambush

The heroes and Kongs assemble vehicles and travel toward Bowser. On Rainbow Road, Bowser’s forces attack. The battle breaks the alliance’s momentum: the Kong army is captured, while Mario and Donkey Kong fall from the road and end up inside a large sea creature.

Peach and Toad return to the Mushroom Kingdom to organize an evacuation. Bowser arrives with his floating fortress. To protect her people, Peach agrees to the wedding. Bowser prepares a ceremony that will include sacrificing his prisoners, among them Luigi and the captured Kongs, in lava.

5. Mario and Donkey Kong return

Inside the creature, Mario and Donkey Kong’s antagonism gives way to a more honest recognition of what each is trying to prove. They escape using the rocket from Donkey Kong’s vehicle and return to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Peach’s agreement to marry Bowser is a tactic, not a change of heart. At the wedding she uses an Ice Flower supplied with Toad’s help to freeze Bowser and interrupt the ceremony. Mario and Donkey Kong arrive to help free the prisoners. Mario finally reaches Luigi, making the rescue he has been pursuing since the pipe separated them.

6. The battle moves to Brooklyn

Bowser retaliates by launching a giant Bomber Bill at the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario redirects it into the warp pipe. Its explosion inside the passage pulls the surrounding combatants and Bowser’s fortress through to Brooklyn.

The brothers’ extraordinary adventure has now reached the neighborhood where they first wanted to prove themselves. Bowser attacks Mario, and even Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong cannot stop him. Mario briefly retreats into a nearby restaurant. Seeing his own plumbing advertisement helps him gather the resolve to return to the fight.

7. The brothers share the Super Star

Mario tries to reach the Super Star, but Bowser’s fire blocks him. Luigi runs forward with a manhole cover and shields his brother. Together they reach the Star and gain its power. The brothers defeat Bowser and his army in a coordinated rush through the neighborhood.

Peach gives Bowser a Mini Mushroom, shrinking him so he can be contained. Brooklyn celebrates the brothers as heroes, and the family who doubted their business recognizes what they have done. The ending then shows Mario and Luigi living and working in the Mushroom Kingdom, beginning another day together.

Ending Explained

Why do Mario and Luigi both need the Super Star?

The Star provides the power that lets them defeat Bowser, but Luigi’s intervention makes reaching it possible. Mario’s determination has carried him a long way; at the decisive moment, his brother protects him from the fire. The ending makes the partnership more than a name on their advertisement.

How does Bowser get to Brooklyn?

Mario redirects the Bomber Bill into the warp pipe. The explosion inside the passage pulls the nearby forces and fortress into Brooklyn. The final battle is therefore a consequence of Mario’s attempt to save the Mushroom Kingdom from the missile, not a separate trip Bowser had planned.

What happens to Bowser?

After the brothers defeat him, Peach shrinks Bowser with a Mini Mushroom. He is imprisoned rather than killed. The mid-credits scene confirms that he remains alive and still preoccupied with Peach.

Do the brothers return to their old lives?

They save their neighborhood and receive recognition from their family, but the closing scene places them in the Mushroom Kingdom. The film shows them living there together and heading out to work. It does not spell out every practical detail of travel between the two worlds.

RecapRush Interpretation

The pipe separates two brothers who have built their identity around being a team. The story then gives Mario most of the active journey while Luigi waits in captivity. That imbalance makes Luigi’s final action important: he is not merely a person Mario has collected at the end of a quest. He becomes the person who makes Mario’s survival possible.

Their first attempt to rescue Brooklyn fails to establish them as professionals. Their second, after the worlds collide, succeeds because the brothers bring new experience and new allies home. The destination has changed them, but the relationship that sent Mario searching has remained the same.

Deep Analysis & Key Themes

Persistence is a skill before it is a victory

Peach’s training course gives Mario permission to fail visibly. A power-up helps, but it does not replace timing, attention or practice. That pattern continues through the Donkey Kong fight and the final battle: Mario improves by returning to the task, adapting and accepting help. The film’s game-like structure makes repeated attempts part of the character story.

Bowser confuses love with possession

Bowser’s plans for Peach combine a grand romantic performance with the threat of conquest. Her refusal is not a boundary he accepts; it is an obstacle he expects his power to remove. His wedding preparations expose the contradiction between wanting to be loved and coercing someone into agreement. Peach’s apparent acceptance is motivated by the lives at risk, not affection for him.

Rivalry gives Mario and Donkey Kong a mirror

The arena encourages both characters to treat success as a public performance. Mario wants to prove he is capable; Donkey Kong wants to remain the impressive fighter the crowd cheers. Their later cooperation works when neither can win alone. The shift gives their action scenes a purpose beyond supplying another recognizable game character.

Animation makes changing rules readable

The film’s mushrooms, suits, blocks and vehicles give power a clear visual form. Mario’s body and abilities change, and the audience can immediately see the new possibilities. Losing a power-up makes vulnerability just as legible. Rainbow Road expands the same idea to an environment where a beautiful surface can become a deadly edge.

What Most Viewers Missed

  • The final rescue reverses the brothers’ roles. Mario spends the journey trying to save Luigi, then Luigi protects Mario before they reach the Star.
  • The wedding is a hostage situation beneath its pageantry. Peach’s agreement follows Bowser’s threat to the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • The Brooklyn setting closes the opening ambition. The brothers wanted to help their neighborhood and be taken seriously; the final battle makes that wish concrete.
  • Power-ups have limits in the story. Mario still needs practice and allies, so magical upgrades do not automatically make him capable.

Mid- and Post-Credits

The mid-credits scene returns to the miniature Bowser, who sings about Peach from captivity before a guard interrupts him. After the main credits, a green-spotted egg in the Brooklyn sewers begins to hatch and Yoshi’s name is heard. This guide describes those moments as presented in the 2023 film, without importing later sequel events into their explanation.

Final Thoughts

The Super Mario Bros. Movie builds a colorful adventure around a relationship that is easy to understand: one brother will cross an unfamiliar world to find the other. Its final fight pays off that promise by letting Luigi’s courage matter as much as Mario’s persistence. The Super Star gives them extraordinary strength; their willingness to stand together is what allows them to use it.
